PARÍS - El uso del velo para las mujeres era común entre los judíos desde tiempos inmemoriales, registra la Biblia, y ya existía entre los árabes antes del advenimiento del Islam.
Pero no todos los velos utilizados ahora en el mundo musulmán son iguales.
El velo islámico que deben utilizar muchas mujeres musulmanas para ocultar al menos parcialmente su rostro y a veces también sus cuerpos se inscribe en tradiciones anteriores al propio Islam.
El "hiyab" (o "hiyeben", en dialecto magrebí) tiene su raíz en la palabra árabe "hajaba", que significa esconder, ocultarse de las miradas, poner una distancia. Este velo esconde el cabello, las orejas y el cuello, y sólo deja ver el óvalo del rostro.
Promovido por los Hermanos Musulmanes, una organización con un acercamiento político al Islam, se completa habitualmente con una túnica o un impermeable.
Su uso está generalizado en el mundo musulmán, donde reemplaza vestimentas tradicionales que se remontan a la época romana como el "haik" en el norte de Africa, una gran pieza de lana o algodón de 5 metros por 1.6 metros, que disimula la forma del cuerpo y oculta el rostro.
El velo también se denomina "litham" (oculta nariz) o "jimar", término genérico que designa todo lo que cubre la cabeza, y que va en general hasta la cintura: mantilla, chal o bufanda.
Tapadas de pies a cabeza
La "burqa", en su origen, es la vestimenta tradicional de las tribus pashtún en Afganistán.
Este largo velo, de color azul o marrón, cubre completamente la cabeza y el cuerpo de la mujer musulmana, y apenas tiene una rejilla sobre los ojos para permitirle cierta visión.
Desde hace algunos años, a los ojos del mundo occidental, la "burqa" se convirtió en símbolo del régimen de los talibanes en Afganistán, que lo hizo obligatorio.
La "burqa" tiene su equivalente árabe, el "niqab", que se extendió bajo la influencia del Islam wahabita. Este gran velo se complementa con una tela que sólo deja una ranura para los ojos. Algunas mujeres visten además gafas de sol y guantes.
El "niqab" tiene su raíz etimológica en la palabra árabe "naqaba", que quiere decir "agujerear", porque sólo tiene dos agujeros para los ojos.
El "chador" (del persa "chaddar") es una vestimenta tradicional de las mujeres en Irán que cubre desde la cabeza hasta los dedos del pie, y es utilizada sobre todo por quienes practican la religión.
Se trata de una tela semicircular abierta en el frente que no posee ni abertura para las manos ni cierre, pero que es sujetada con la mano o con los dientes, o envolviendo sus extremos en torno a la cintura.
El uso del chador no es obligatorio en la República islámica, a diferencia del velo que cubre el cabello pero deja la cara al descubierto.
